Mangifera indica 'Ataulfo'
Ataulfo is Mexico's own mango, selected in the Soconusco region of Chiapas and now loved worldwide as the honey or champagne mango. Its smallish, flattened, kidney-shaped fruit ripen to a deep golden yellow with a slightly wrinkled skin, and the flesh is buttery smooth, practically fibreless, and intensely sweet with a gentle tang. A thin seed means plenty of flesh per fruit. Perfect for eating fresh, with chile and lime, or in smoothies, salsas and desserts. It thrives in hot climates with a dry season. How to Care for It
Plant in full sun in deep, well-drained soil; mangoes dislike waterlogging. Water regularly while young. Once established, ease off watering for a couple of months before flowering, since a dry spell triggers bloom, then water while fruit develop. Feed after harvest and before flowering with a fruit-tree fertiliser low in nitrogen. Protect young trees from frost. Prune right after harvest to keep the canopy low and airy.
The backbone of a tropical orchard. Mangoes, Booth 8 avocado, red mamey, chicozapote, carambola, dwarf coconuts, jackfruit and dragon fruit: reliable, productive trees that thrive in Mexico's warm lowlands and coasts, grown on our farms and shipped by DHL.
