Red Banana Plant (Plátano Rojo / Morado)

Musa acuminata (AAA group) 'Red Dacca'

Sale price: $1,640 MXN Regular price: $2,340 Save $700 (30% off)

The red banana is as beautiful as it is delicious. Tall stems and leaf midribs are tinted reddish-purple, and the thick, chunky fruit ripens with a maroon-red skin over creamy, slightly pink-tinged flesh. The flavour is sweet and rich, with hints of raspberry and a denser texture than a Cavendish; eat it when the skin darkens and gives slightly to the touch. It takes a little longer to fruit than common bananas, but the bunches are worth the wait. Available as a rhizome (the most economical option), a young plant or an established plant.

  • Maroon-red fruit with creamy, sweet flesh
  • Rich flavour with raspberry hints
  • Reddish stems make it ornamental too
  • Known in Mexico as plátano morado

About the Red Banana Plant (Plátano Rojo / Morado)

The red banana is as beautiful as it is delicious. Tall stems and leaf midribs are tinted reddish-purple, and the thick, chunky fruit ripens with a maroon-red skin over creamy, slightly pink-tinged flesh. The flavour is sweet and rich, with hints of raspberry and a denser texture than a Cavendish; eat it when the skin darkens and gives slightly to the touch. It takes a little longer to fruit than common bananas, but the bunches are worth the wait. Available as a rhizome (the most economical option), a young plant or an established plant.

How to Care for It

To plant a rhizome (corm), dig a hole about 50 cm wide and deep, mix in compost, and set the corm with its top just at soil level; water once and then sparingly until leaves appear. Bananas want full sun, shelter from strong wind, rich soil and abundant water without waterlogging. Feed monthly with a potassium-rich fertiliser, mulch heavily and remove damaged leaves.

From statement ornamentals like variegated Musa, Siam Ruby and the blood banana to fruiting red, apple and Cavendish bananas. Every variety comes in three sizes: a rhizome (the most affordable way to start), a young plant, or an established plant for instant impact.
