Heliconia Bihai Lobster Claw Plant

Heliconia bihai

Sale price: $625 MXN Regular price: $780 Save $155 (20% off)

Heliconia bihai holds its flowers upright: a stiff, flattened spike of big, boat-shaped bracts in glowing red with yellow-green margins, like a row of lobster claws pointing to the sky. Above it rise tall, paddle-shaped leaves that give a garden instant tropical structure. The bracts last a long time on the plant and are a florist favourite for bold arrangements. Bihai loves heat, sun and moisture and forms dense clumps that make a superb screen or backdrop in humid-tropical gardens. Available as a rhizome, potted young plant or flowering-size clump.

About the Heliconia Bihai Lobster Claw Plant

Heliconia bihai holds its flowers upright: a stiff, flattened spike of big, boat-shaped bracts in glowing red with yellow-green margins, like a row of lobster claws pointing to the sky. Above it rise tall, paddle-shaped leaves that give a garden instant tropical structure. The bracts last a long time on the plant and are a florist favourite for bold arrangements. Bihai loves heat, sun and moisture and forms dense clumps that make a superb screen or backdrop in humid-tropical gardens. Available as a rhizome, potted young plant or flowering-size clump.

How to Care for It

To plant a rhizome, lay it horizontally 5–10 cm deep in rich, well-drained soil with any shoot pointing up, water well and keep the soil just moist until new growth appears. It flowers best in full sun to light shade with constant moisture. Feed monthly in the rainy season with a balanced fertiliser, mulch generously and cut each stem at the base after its flowers fade.

Nothing says tropical like a heliconia in flower. Choose from the ten most popular varieties, including hanging lobster claw, Lady Di, Golden Torch, wagneriana and Sexy Pink. Start from a rhizome, or buy a potted young plant or a flowering-size clump.
